How to Find the Piano Key for the First Ledger Line Below the Treble Staff
The first ledger line below the treble staff is middle C, written C4. Start from the bottom line, E, find the ledger line beneath the staff, and match it to the C4 key on a standard 88-key piano.
Start from a line you know
The lines of the treble staff, from bottom to top, are E, G, B, D and F. The bottom line is E. Use that line as your starting point whenever a note sits below the staff.
Find the ledger line
A ledger line is a short extra line drawn below (or above) the staff for a note that does not fit on it. The first ledger line under the staff is C4, the note usually called middle C. It is the same middle C that sits between the treble and bass staves on the grand staff.
Match it to the keyboard
On a standard 88-key piano, middle C is C4, the fourth C key from the left. It is the white key immediately to the left of a group of two black keys. If your keyboard is smaller, the key in the middle of the instrument is not necessarily C4, so check the labelled range or the manual instead of choosing the key nearest the centre.
Worked exercise
Treble clef, no key signature.
- Name the note written on the bottom line of the staff.
- Name the note written on the first ledger line below the staff.
- Which key on a standard 88-key piano plays the note in question 2?
Answer key:
- E (E4).
- C (C4, middle C).
- The fourth C counting from the left end of the keyboard.
A common mistake
Do not treat a ledger line as one of the five staff lines. Each ledger line carries its own note name, so a note sitting on it is read from its own position, not from the nearest line or space of the staff.
